Q: Frequently Asked Questions TV and FM Installations

A: Below are a few questions that our Customer Services Team get asked on a regular basis. Many calls we receive often need a simple solution, and we may be able to answer your query here. However, if in doubt please do call our Customer Service Team on 01553 811000 or (CLICK HERE) to contact them.

Q: What is the difference between grouped aerial and wideband aerial?

A: A grouped aerial is designed to maximize reception of a particular group of frequencies within the entire frequency spectrum that TV signals are broadcast over. A wideband aerial covers the entire range of frequencies but has slightly less gain than a grouped aerial, resulting in a slightly weaker signal reception. The benefit of a wideband aerial is that it will receive all available TV signals in any part of the country, whereas a grouped aerial can only be used in the area that receives those particular frequencies.

Q: Do I need an aerial for each individual TV set?

A: Not necessarily. By using a signal booster with an aerial input and several outputs you can distribute the television signals around the home to a number of individual sets. However, if this is impractical it may be worth considering a discrete indoor aerial for any portable TV sets in bedrooms or extensions.

Q: Can aerials be mounted in the loft?

A:  The simple answer is yes. All grouped, wideband and FM aerials can be mounted in the loft space. However this may attenuate (weaken) the signal and you may get 'ghosting' caused by signals being reflected off metal objects and bouncing back to the aerial. On screen this would appear as a faint outline around the objects.

Q: Can a TV aerial be used for radio reception?

A: No - you need separate aerials for TV and FM radio reception. The difference in frequency range between TV signals and FM signals is too large for a single aerial to receive both. However you can diplex (combine) TV and FM signals so they both travel along the same coaxial cable. Also, Maxview signal boosters amplify both sets of signals.

Q: Can signal boosters be left on all the time?

A: Yes - all Maxview signal boosters are designed for continuous use, that is, they do not need to be removed from the power when not in use.

Q: What is a diplexer?

A: A diplexer can be used to combine signals from two different aerials and feed them down the same cable. For instance, you may have an aerial receiving signals from one transmitter, and an additional signal receiving different stations from another transmitter, or you may have a TV aerial and an FM aerial mounted on your home. You could feed both sets of signals into a TV/FM Splitter/Combiner and then take a single cable to a TV/FM Splitter/Combiner at the outlet point. The cable would then go into a TV/FM Outlet plate which has separate sockets for TV and FM signals. Combined TV signals do not need to be split and can be fed directly into the TV outlet socket or TV/VCR etc.

Q: Do I require a special aerial to receive the terrestrial digital signal.

A: No - the terrestrial digital signal is in the same frequency range as the analogue television signal. Your existing aerial may already be able to receive the digital signal, unless you are using a "Grouped" aerial and the digital channels are in a different group, whereas you may then need to upgrade your aerial to a Wide Band.
